What is Triphala?

what is triphala

A digestion-supporting trifecta.

Tree-phala, tri-faa-laa, or some combination of the two, we're not entirely certain, but, as dear Billy Shakespeare once said: A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.

So let's ditch the diction difficulties and dive into the benefits of this illustrious herbal combination.

What is Triphala?

Triphala, literally meaning "three fruits" in Sanskrit, is a combination of three fruits, all native to the subcontinent of India.

These fruits, Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica) and Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), when combined have both detoxifying and protecting effects.

What are the Benefits of Triphala?

Most commonly, Triphala is known as a digestive support that promotes regularity and absorption of nutrients.

Studies have also proven Triphala to be a powerful antioxidant that defends the body against the negative effects of free radicals, and yet another study has shown Triphala to be beneficial in lowering cholesterol levels.

Because of its cleansing properties, Triphala supports the body's natural detoxification processes. Haritaki, specifically, is known in Ayurveda for its "scraping" abilities and encourages the body to release built-up toxins.

In addition to detoxifying and rejuvenating, Triphala is also supportive of many other systems in the body. The Ayurvedic tradition looks to Triphala to support a healthy respiratory system, cardiovascular health, bladder and urinary tract, reproductive organs in both women and men, and the nervous system.

Although typically taken as a combination, adaptogenic super-herb, the three fruits that comprise Triphala also each tout their own health benefits. Amalaki strengthens the body's liver and immune system function, bibhitaki is responsible for bolstering the respiratory system, and haritaki, in addition to "scraping" toxins out of the body, may help with weight maintenance or even loss as well as inflammation.
